What is OTT and How Does it Work? | Over The Top Explained

Netflix, Hulu and Disney plus other than being practical household names. They all have one thing in common and that’s OTT. And if you haven’t heard of OTT before you are not alone, so stick around. I will explain on the topic “what is OTT and how does it work”.

OTT Revolution

Today we’re going to go over one of my favorite topics, how to make money online with videos, and how OTT can help you do just that. We’re in the middle of an OTT revolution. The video streaming world is experiencing a massive growth spurt, and it’s unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. And if you’re on the fence about getting your videos online, this post might change your mind. By the end of this post, you will understand three things:
1. What exactly is OTT
2. why it’s considered the future of video consumption and,
3. how OTT can help you make money.

What is OTT

OTT stands for over the top. And it means that we’re streaming video not through traditional cable, but actually through the internet to devices such as your laptop, your phone, your Xbox, your other internet connected devices. So rather than streaming videos through traditional cable, you’re streaming them through the internet. Even though OTT has been around for a while. It’s now becoming mainstream and earning its place in media. And I noticed that there’s a lot of terms everyone often gets confused. These are:
– OTT devices,
– (Over The Top) apps, and
– Service providers and content providers of (Over The Top),
– (Over The Top) platforms

Over The Top Explained

First off is OTT devices. And that is any device that can bypass the traditional cable and goes through the internet such as Apple TV, Roku, Amazon, Fire TV, Chromecast, Android TV. There’s lots of them. For example, even your laptop and your phone that streams through the internet can be considered (Over The Top) as well.

Next up is OTT streaming services and (Over The Top) content providers. Just as the name suggests, these are content providers such as your Hulu, your Disney plus your Netflix, your HBO NOW that you can watch anytime and anywhere, those are OTT content providers.

Alright, but let’s step away from the big names for a second, there’s actually a myth that I want to uncover with you. (Over The Top) apps are not just for big players, even independent and small providers can launch their own OTT app and be very successful. Take quality TV, for example, they have a library of over 400 Films documentaries that celebrate the global black community. They’ve launched their own OTT app for all types of devices, including Apple TV, Roku, Amazon, fire, Android TV, and of course, desktop and mobile as well. Their OTT app allows subscribers to watch their content in the same immersive experience that Netflix and Hulu provide. But the content is niche and immeasurably more personal.

So for businesses, entrepreneurs, creators of all kinds, (Over The Top) can enable you to reach your audience anywhere in the world. So now the glue that holds everything together is actually the OTT apps. The apps are built specific to the technical specifications provided by those devices. And these are the apps that actually enable the streaming of video right at your home companies such as you screen enable you to launch your own app on these various (Over The Top) devices.

OTT Versus Traditional TV

Now, let’s think in terms of OTT versus traditional TV. Even if we ignore the fact that traditional TV is slowly going away. The pandemic has significantly expanded the adoption of OTT. There’s been a 30% increase in OTT adoption just in the last few months. Here are a few reasons why:

– First is the lack of being able to attend live sports in person. I enjoy going to the stadium to watch them play. But due to the pandemic, I’m not able to do so I’m able to watch live events through OTT devices from the comfort of my home.

– Second is people want to learn new things. Think about how many people are watching how to videos, tutorials, and all these different types of learning content that’s being consumed online. And also people have the need to learn new things.

– And since so many are unemployed, they’re looking for new ways to make money and they’re looking to improve their skills and that ultimately increases search for on demand videos online, you get the idea.

Over The Top Service and Pandemic

(Over The Top) market is expanding rapidly because so many people are searching and viewing content from the comfort of their homes. But don’t get me wrong, we would have eventually reached this point over time, but the pandemic has significantly accelerated the adoption. According to the digital marketing outlook, were set to view 25% more content on OTT devices by 2025. That’s a significant increase. We’re talking over a half a billion people more watching content than they are today. Video has always been a big deal for us, but it has never been so integrated into our lives. This is not something that’s going to go away anytime soon, we can now see that video is not just the norm for consumers, it’s absolutely vital.

What it can do for you?

Well, for one businesses that operate in person (Over The Top) enables you to stream your videos anywhere in the world and consumers can watch them at any time. This means that you can build a recurring business over time by selling access to your content, which they can view at any time in the comfort of their homes. At the same time, (Over The Top) can be a launching pad for new businesses looking to put their content online.

If you play it right, you can earn substantial income from launching your own OTT apps. And I’m talking six figures on plus platforms such as you screen enable you to get your own app on these OTT devices. And all you need to do is upload your content, organize it, they’ll launch and build the apps for you. You can launch both on demand videos as well as live streams and most importantly, you can monetize them. Alright, this is all about what OTT is, the various types of this service, how to launch your own OTT apps and how to make money from (Over The Top).
